Darwin to Berry Springs

Turns out, we like hot springs! Also, as mentioned previously, all the national parks were fully booked (what is it, Pitt St out here?) so for Litchfield National Park we made the Berry Springs area our base, about 45 minutes north of the park. Our home was Tumbling Waters, which apparently Lonely Planet dubbed the best caravan park in the NT (they were quite keen to share this intel). And it was pretty great! A little tropical paradise with an outdoor cinema, freshwater croc sanctuary, onsite cafe and most importantly a swimming pool directly opposite our site.

A little freshie sunbaking in its sanctuary.
Also, a moth sanctuary?
Night swimming!
Night wandering.
Movie night was unfortunately a now-questionable 2000s comedy where Paul Hogan and Michael Caton pretend to be a gay couple.
Detective Jay Swan basking in the warm moonlight.

Berry Springs was quite a bit bigger than Bitter Springs, and a smidge cooler. Apparently some of the fish liked to take little nibbles out of people’s dangling legs. We spent a late, lazy afternoon there. Conversation bubbling up between strangers was 99% about caravanning, tourist hotspots and where people called home. It’s always good for a bit of an eavesdrop and sometimes you pick up some good intel too!

Impossible, impossible to get a good photo altogether 😂
Noodles are a must-have accessory at the springs. Snorkels picked up in Darwin a plus!

As Litchfield was a day trip we only stopped in at two of the main highlights, Florence Falls and Wangi Falls. I will admit, having read about that recent saltwater croc attack at Wangi, I was not feeling wildly confident about our swimming prospects.

Overlooking Florence Falls.
This was a primo rock location, perfect for selfies. People swapped in and out, posing perfunctorily. Me included!
You can just see Oli and Lux in the middle with green noodles! It felt quite safe croc-wise as the water was so low. However Mitch did get bitten… by a fish!

It made complete sense that the national park campsites were all booked out as this spot was heaving. The constant flow of humans, combined with the pounding sound of the waterfall, made for quite an intense visit.

Mitch managed to find some zen though.
Both Oli and Lux snorkelled out to the waterfall, Lux got so cold her lips turned blue!
Chilling on the bridge while Mitch rescues Lux’s shoe I dropped in the creek when I fell in earlier! Woops.
Wangi Falls, of croc attack fame. I basically wouldn’t let them swim – a quick dip in and out thank you!
It’s hard to imagine a waterhole this busy and managed by rangers had a croc in it. It did prompt discussions about the possibility of croc culls in the NT news at the time.
Da-da! Thank you Litchfield NP!

I suppose by now you know the difference between a saltie and a freshie. What is it? Presumably they are less likely to attack on land than in the water?
I have checked that the temperature at the time I read you email — in Darwin it was 32C which sounds quite nice. But how are you managing the humidity? But you will be used to all that from your Bali days!
Super photos and lovely comments. Keep it up please
